Traditional Chinese shops are open-fronted, with wooden shutters that are often stacked outside the front while the shop is open. In Zhujiajiao the traditions from the Qing Dynasty and earlier--before Western influence took hold--are preserved, so the shops have banners outside advertising what they sell. Very attractive.
Notice there is another archway here. In former times, towns were divided into "wards", so this was presumably a ward boundary.
