No 88 Meizhoulu also has this ornate "window" into the courtyard. Such openwork carvings as windows between courtyards were quite common in Qing dynasty houses, but I don't think they were that common between the courtyard and the street. Chinese families valued their privacy from the outside world, although not within the family compound!
