As you walk in towards the old town centre, you pass under this arch marking the boundary of the Qing (pronounced "Ching") dynasty town. The Qing Dynasty was the last imperial dynasty, ruling from 1646 to 1911. They were Manchus, from the north-east, and it was under the Manchus that all Han Chinese (the national majority) should wear their hair in a pigtail to distinguish them. |
