Shanghai
Sunday, June 5, 2005 Everyone knows of Shanghai, the huge metropolis on the Huangpo River. Shanghai has a population of some 16 million residents, plus about 5 million "immigrant workers", though it must be borne in mind that they do not all live in what we would recognise as the city, but rather in the whole of the area governed by the Shanghai Municipality. Shanghai food is one of the major cuisines of China, and is noted for its tendency to sweetness. Many of the dishes most favoured by Westerners, like "lemon chicken" are in fact Shanghai cuisine, not Cantonese as they think. There will be more to come in this gallery, but for the moment there are only these Zhujiajiao specialities.
